Master Link, Sub-Assemblies and Hardware size requirements when fabricating directly into links, rings, and other hardware

Here are a couple of pointers for anyone who needs to quote or design a synthetic bridle sling. The most important aspect is to select the proper hardware size to meet the sling capacity. Other than the obvious criteria of hardware CAPACITY you have to take into consideration the hardware STOCK diameter.

  1. All Uni-Web® slings can be used with any hardware stock diameter of at least 3/8” diameter. YOU decide on matching capacities as customers sometimes want weird combinations (e.g. a 16,500 lbs sling into an 7,000 lbs master link, rated for that master link).
  2. Uni-Path® Round Slings need hardware minimum stock diameters as indicated in the tables on this page.
These stock diameters are the one’s listed in the 2010 WSTDA Specification, page 23. If your customer needs to connect to smaller than the listed (round) stock diameters the sling needs to be downrated acc. to WSTDA 4.7.1.1 If your are not familiar with such calculations do NOT attempt to calculate this yourself but ask Unirope.
  3. Note: ASTM B30.9 Chapter 5, 9-5.4 stipulates that “The design factor for web (and round) slings shall be a minimum of 5”. By definition the term “sling” also includes all FITTINGS which are part of a web sling hence, all FITTINGS attached to “web/round slings” MUST also have a Design Factor of 5:1. Therefor, if you use grade 80/100 fittings connected to a web/round sling that fitting MUST have a capacity rating based on a Design Factor of 5:1 instead of 4:1 (as applied to alloy chains).
  4. All Twin-Path® slings made from K-Spec® fibers require hardware sizes which at least matches the sling capacity.
